Sounds quite bad. The out-and-out Commies in a strong third place? That (and the Animal Welfare Party) will solve their problems, sure.
“I voted Balkenende because I don’t want a leftist government that hits us with taxes and lets immigrants live on welfare,” said Loes Fijneman, a storeowner.
Makes sense, Loes, but you know, you must be part of a small, dying breed of sanity in Euroland.
This, observers said, was almost certainly a reaction to two actions of Ms. Verdonk that have been central to the immigration debate: Her promise last week to ban the burka, a garment worn by few women in the Netherlands; and her decision earlier this year to revoke the Dutch citizenship of a popular MP, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a Muslim immigrant and outspoken opponent of Islamic extremism.
That decision caused the centre-right government to collapse, triggering the election. Ms. Ali, whose citizenship was later returned, has moved to the United States to work for a conservative think tank.
"A lot of voters seemed to think that she [Ms. Verdonk] was too severe," said Henk Foekema, director of social polling for NIPO, a Dutch polling organization.
2-2=2? This guy is confused. Verdonk got canned because she came across as an idiot in the Ali thing, not because people thought she was too harsh in immigration policy (particularly with Ali's case). This is the nonsense I had to read for a year in Toronto. Shudder. Good thing I was younger then.

Canuck Pravda interprets the results of Dutch vote.
