Cell-phone blues

A would-be JJ from Canuckiashows off his prowess at surfing the web on his cell phone. Bill ensues. Brains fried.

"The thing is, they've cut my phone off for being like 100 dollars over," he told CBC News. "Here, I'm 85,000 dollars over and nobody bothered to give me a call and tell me what was going on."

At times I really hate (with all the meaning behind it) cellphone companies.

It's people like JJ (and this moron from Canada) that keep them afloat. How did humanity survive for eons without constantly jabbering into a gizmo?

I think we wrote letters. Blogs and e-mails today.

Have you guys tried skype.com yet? I've been talking audio/video over the internet, from Bismarck to Ulaan Bataar. It'd be a great way to stay in touch with relatives in Romania, JJ's girlfriends in Italia, or cousins in Portugal too. Check it out. Super easy to use.

Yep--I do have a Skype account (same name as email), but I only check it occasionally. The reception is terrible, maybe because the guy non the other line has a cheapo microphone? I bought an expensive one, still crappy sound. Cell phones are not much better -- I only trust landlines. Oh, for the good old days of crank phones!

My experience thus far with skype has been exceptional, and the person receiving my calls is using some standard internet phone jack in a flat in Ulaan Bataar.

My skype microphone cost me $30 (got it at überWalmart), and that's about as much as I paid for a 30 minute international phone card last time.

Maybe we could get funding to do a skype study?

I paid some $50 for top-of-the-line gizmo, but all I get is static and echo. But maybe it's thee bad line at the other end? Gotta try it with someone in the US, where computers do work...

Yeah, we could try it out sometime. I'll e-mail my skype user id to your university e-mail account. Try looking me up on skype the next time you're on.
