The Problem is the Captain

...not the First Mate.

A shame. In 2000 he would have made a first rate Captain. Instead we got a choice between the Gory Harvard Gerbil and the Boneless Yale Chimp. And that ship has now sunk.

"But it’s not enough. Palin may have enabled McCain to live to fight another day – and if he were to win, it would be in large measure because she energised that otherwise stay-at-home base -- but she cannot win this thing for him if he doesn’t pass muster."

Excellent point. Do any of you guys (except Pepe, bien sur, who's happy as a clam) have the impression we're watching a slo-mo train wreck?

Not that any of this matters, but this is worth highlighting:

In the early 1990s, reports Stanley Kurtz, senior fellow at the Ethics and Policy Center, Obama was personally recruited by Chicago's ACORN to run training sessions in ‘direct action.’ That's the euphemism for the techniques used under the cover of the federal Community Reinvestment Act to intimidate financial institutions into giving what have been called ‘Ninja’ loans — no income, no job, no assets — to people who couldn't afford them.

CRA was designed to increase minority homeownership. Whenever a bank wanted to grow or expand, ACORN would file complaints that it was not sufficiently sensitive to the needs of minorities in providing home loans. Agitators would then be unleashed.

Chicago's ACORN used Alinsky's tactics against institutions such as Bell Federal Savings and Loan and Avondale Federal Savings. In September 1992, the Chicago Tribune described the group's agenda as ‘affirmative action lending.’

Obama also helped ACORN get funding. When he served on the board of the Woods Fund for Chicago with Weather Underground terrorist William Ayers, the Woods Fund frequently gave ACORN grants to fund its activist agenda.

Hail to Planet Pepe!

This is an excellent article on two levels, and especially spot on for today's discussion. This toilet that's overflowing is all Barney Frank's fault. The was the media and AI are playing this is to blame Palin or something.
Further, McCain had better be doing the gambling man's thing and holding these aces up his sleeve for the last bit or he's losing just on Senatorial courtesy.

I disagree with Krauthammer about the number of Hail Marys one can throw in a game. I've seen Favre throw a lot of passes that to other QBs would have been Hail Marys and to him are just completions.

My feel (and AI Rove will call me a Pollyanna) is that Wright and Ayers and everything else is coming out in the next 3 weeks and it is right that it be that way.

You can't give the dumbass American voter wrapped up in some psychotic mantra of change any more credit than remembering Wright and the rest for one news cycle.

Pepe knows a thing or two about firing too soon. Maybe Mac knows what he's doing this time too.

I hope you're right, JJ, but this sounds more like ouzo-laden wishful thinking than a sound prediction.

For all it's worth, that "messiah of change" phase of Obama's campaign is gone, as Kraut makes the case, has been replaced by a "I feel your pain" replay of Bubba's 1992 gambit. But what's really killing Mac now is the economy tanking right before the elections. This is bad luck on a monster scale -- well, not just to him, but to just about everyone else, except Obama (and perhaps Pepe?)

My take is that many people who were just about ready to vote with McCain in early September are now running scared that they're gonna lose their jobs, and their shirts. In such a frame of mind, they're just gonna tune out Wright, Ayers, Alinsky, Rezko, and the merry band. Mac can throw the kitchen sink at Obama -- what are the chances that any of that will stick now, if it didn't really stick in the Spring? I mean, he can try (and he should -- what else can he do?) but realistically speaking, with the MSM 99% in the tank for Obama, and with the economy imploding, what can McCain do? Especially since he knows zilch about the economy -- did anyone notice how he called this a "fiscal crisis" during the debate? -- and Palin, however well meaning, can't help him at all on this.

Time to hit the bottle.

Talking about hitting the bottle, AI, will you be over that early October business by next weekend? If so, I can send you an e-mail by, say, Thursday, to set up a time for hitting a worthy bottle or two?

Actually, that's the weekend when I'm most busy. But the weekend after would be perfect. Just beam me up a couple of days before.

You gotta be a Yale prof to figure this one out: ``Voters praise or blame the incumbent party in the White House for the economy,'' said Ray Fair, a professor at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. ``Rising unemployment is a negative for McCain.''

``The credit flow appears to be a trickle,'' said former Fed governor Lyle Gramley, now senior economic adviser at the Stanford Group Co. in Washington. ``If that persists, we'd be seeing job losses of 300,000 to 400,000 a month and consumer spending collapsing.'' Don't worry, be happy.

``The economy is being hit on all fronts,'' said Chris Rupkey, chief financial economist at Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ Ltd. in New York. ``We may be entering a deep recession.'' You don't say. Try palinka.

Au contraire; she danced round Biden like a matador sticking her knives into a clapped-out old bull

Seriously, is that what you guys saw ?

Happened a few times, but not at all consistently. He's a wily, oily pinko shyster -- and a blowhard on top of it. I would rather trust a used car salesman. She can function adequately if she hits her level of competence (which is pretty low), but she easily gets lost otherwise.
