That was right after that Nicaraguan sub scare! Whew! But now that you're on that, it sounds like a good time to read some Tom Barnett.

A Chinese submarine stalked a U.S. aircraft carrier battle group in the Pacific last month and surfaced within firing range of its torpedoes and missiles before being detected, The Washington Times has learned.

Adm. Fallon better get his head out of his political arse, and get it back in the control room of that big carrier fleet. Us civies don't enjoy funding incompetence, especially when there's a bunch of sailors in his hands too. Anyhow, the commies have been doin' this to us like we have done it to them for decades.

this is NOT the first time chinese submarines have been "in close contact" with Yankee carrier fleets. When in Taiwan, during the build up for the election which saw the overthrow of the KMT government by an indendence minded party, the Chinese threatened invasion should the KMT lose. So, as something to provide pause, the US Pacific fleet sent a battlegroup, just above Taiwan, in the Sea of Japan. One of the old KMT hands I had befriended in the late 80s told me that the ROC [Taiwanese] forces were helping the Yanks track Chinese submarines shadowing the fleet, and that they had been surprised at there being at least 20. [surprised not because 20 is so terribly high in such a situation, but because that was the number actually verified as detected, which, in his experience, given the underwater terrain around the island, could only be a relatively small fraction of the number actually lurking around].
If the presence of Chinese submarines suprised our fleet, then we have a bigger problem than I imagined.

If they scratch 'em, do not our leaders tear?
