I just had a conversation about the pledge with my little bro earlier today. We agreed that both sides are nuts. It's sort of like listening to athiests or evangelists: "GOD DOESN'T EXIST!!!" "YES HE DOES, GOD EXISTS!!!" Both groups want you to accept their authority, otherwise you're branded an Idiot or Heathen. Strange enough, the good beer still tastes really good no matter which side I sit on.
We agreed that we like saluting the flag, and reflecting on what it means to us, and we pay our taxes on time. However, we really reject the idea that it should or shouldn't be enforced, 100% across the board. If I decide to say the pledge, I shouldn't be banned. If I don't particularly feel like saying the pledge, I shouldn't have to worry about some Redneck kicking my ass (my bro is a bit more durable than I, however, so I don't have to worry much about that when he's around).
OK, OK, very good. But my question is, what if one of those self-professed Socialists (or some other mfker of similar ideologocal bent) comes to power? Will all these luxuries still be afforded to you, in the same spirit of magnanimity? Somehow, I doubt it.
So far it hasn't happened, AI. If it did, I suppose we could find one of those abandoned nuclear silos in Dakota, hang a flag in it, and either salute or not whenever we pleased. With either extreme, it smacks excessively of 1984.
Seriously though: I'd find it hilarious if a Socialist legislated to ban saying something, the pledge or otherwise.
Non-seriously: We'll have to form secret pledge reciting societies, and develop secret handshakes. Don't count on Pepe though. By that time, he'll have a cozy government office job down there in the Big Eazy.
Above all: I'm an American and Libertarian, and we aren't fond of having anyone tell us what we can or cannot do. Like I've said before: Don't tread on me.
That's the spirit, MFT. But don't get too cocky, or complacent -- there were many free spirits in the 20th century who were crushed by those big boots when the time came...
Are you threatening me with Pepe's Big Eazy Boots, AA?
Anyhow, George W. Bush is one of the most socialist presidents we've had to date, expanding the government, getting into everyone's lives, etc. Salute your U.S.S.A, fellahs.
But yes, there has been a big expansion of the Nanny State under his watch. Getting into a bidding war with the Lefties on who can provide more dole is a losing proposition, methinks.

Tinfoil hat alert! Watch out for W's black helicopters!

AI, I usually use the extra heavy duty foil. The black whisper choppers have the technology to penetrate the regular stuff.
