the wild in the American West


AA, we even have wild cats like Brazil too.

Mft, I put up the shot they had in the article. It's kinda small, but is the best composition of any of the others I found. There were a good number of other stories about this lion hunt that you can find (for the time being) here.
Magnificent animals. Seems odd that to investigate their migratory patterns they need to be shot. Also, why did this guy use a stupid shotgun? Not very sporting. No rifle in the truck? What about the cops? A good sized pistol would certainly do the job more humanely.
Anyway, t is indeed interesting that those lions are stilll roaming around up there in NDak. Roll up your car windows.

Yeah, for a long time the lions weren't around. Toward the end of the 19th century, after the "Gilded Age" and the Industrial Revolution slammed full-on into the American West, many fur-bearing animals were nearly wiped out (bison, beaver, mountain lions, etc.).

They have made remarkable come-backs, thanks to Americans getting their sensibilities back. The animals, as you put it, are magnificent. I especially enjoy watching them run and jump -- so graceful. But holy smokes they can be deadly. Considering how close this one was to New Salem (I have relatives who live there), I can't say I care if there was a season on 'em or not -- too many little kids and old folks walking around in New Salem.

Usually North Dakotans are a bit more prepared with firepower. The guy may have used a slug in his shotgun, which would have killed the animal as quick as a rifle. If he didn't, if he in fact used buck-shot, then everyone watching should get a scolding.

It was always a little sobering to see Mountain Lion tracks in the snows at Hyalite.........But not quite as sobering as Grizzly tracks would have been.

Whatever height I could reach on them there Hyalite pines, the Grizzly could. Or did ya think they were mere Ground Sloths?
