Is "John Gross" your other nom-de-plume, Mr. Rot? And yes, these amateur hours tend to end, sooner rather than later. Happened to JFK at the Bay of Pigs, to Jimmah everywhere. And, don't forget, the Drôle de guerre ended rather abruptly, with the Panzerdivisionen smashing through to Paris and Dunkirk.
