Let's not mix apples and oranges, or stoop to BDS-like emotions. There is a war we must win (or, at the very least, not lose). And there are elections to be fought. Hopefully, the two can be taken independently (well, as much as possible).
Counterpoint: He knows that as long as he is tepidly supportive of a military mission — even one that neither aims to achieve nor can possibly achieve victory over America’s enemies — conservatives will not only overlook the slights; they will anxiously commend him and help the New York Times take the lash to those who won’t.
There's no BDS, Tecs. There's a lot of stuff this ass is trying to do that could be the death of us here in the US without any out there in Afghanistan.
Yes, I know. I'm just trying to see if we can compartmentalize this. We do have a bunch of soldiers in that godforsaken land, being shot at all the time, and with no clear goal in sight. What can be done to help them achieve something positive, eg, whup Taliban/AQ ass? Looks like there is a window of opportunity coming up in 2010, after which I'm afraid it's gonna be downhill unless McChrystal shows some concrete results, like Petraeus did way back when in Iraq.
Probably Obama can't have a catastrophe before the election (remember the midterms post?). He'll either prevent Mac from doing anything so that there are no coffins coming in or he'll try to rush the issue?

Well, I have to say that I do hope McChrystal can pull this one out. And I also hope Obama loses reelection.
For him to win a war in Afgh just so that he can wreck the USA from within is putting the cart before the horse.
