Health Minister Bertrand says, "No smoking, Pepe..."

It truly is a filthy habit, addiction, hobby (whatever one wishes to title it), now worth $88.00 (or, 68 Euros), but I'm always bothered by sweeping governmental control over anyone's personal preference (that includes business owners). I like a medium-rare ribeye, but the steak is not somehow enhanced by the idea that someone, somewhere, is eating tofu. The same goes for non-smoking establishments: I enjoy them, but not any more if there were some smoking establishments where others could go and enjoy themselves.

...creeping Totalitarianism, started in Ireland (strange), carried through in California (expected), and back across the pond to France (expected).

i don't see the logic behind preventing restaurants to have a smoking section, provided that all patrons are aware that they'll likely be smoked out, but don't you think qualifying this as totalitarianism is a little overboard?

"creeping totalitarianism" and Totalitarianism are related, but not the same. The one contributes to the other.

Still, it's a mandate from Big Brother, telling individuals what they can and can't do to their bodies.

Legislation will come for my ribeye next. The more society provides Universal Healthcare for One and All!, the more Big Brother is going to get involved in our lives. Do you agree or disagree with that statement?

We should just start eating tofu and drinking nothing but bottled water. Then we Americans and Euros can live forever (that's what the Right and the Left want, correct?).

Couldn't disagree more: US insurance agencies know a lot more about my medical history that the french do. (Let alone the fact that I get much better care there than here)

Then it again appears that we have a difference in worldviews. Enough said.

also: so I don't have to assume, "anonymous said" is Pepe?

One more note: do you think it is important for any nation-state, society, or civilization to have as much variety for individuals as possible?

(in this case, smokers and smoking sections and non-smokers and non-smoking sections)

yes it's pepe

do you think it is important for any nation-state, society, or civilization to have as much variety for individuals as possible?

yes- that's why i don't shop at walmart

You might as well shop at Walmart. It's the equivalent of a large bureaucracy telling individuals in any nation what to do.

(I try to stay away from Walmart as well)
