Revisiting the Vietnam War, Teddy K. style: "In Vietnam, the White House grew increasingly obsessed with victory, and increasingly divorced from the will of the people and any rational policy."
The Liberal Mind, in all its splendor: victory=bad (unless it's for the commies, of course), defeat=good. I couldn't have said it better than Mr. Senator-for-Life.
About the (excellent) article, there's a recurring bit of an idea that I feel I should repeat: It wasn't just that Carter was woefully inadequate to the challenge of the times but that his inadequacy was presented as a kind of moral virtue. This is very Prince-Myshkin=Christ. After Machiavellian Nixon perhaps the swing too far was inevitable, but why did it become so rapidly some kind of ideal? Because W stole the election?
Yes, good find, JJ. BTW, I put a link to it on wiki, betcha a sixpack of hoppy malt that you won't find it in less than 10 minutes, Mr. Click-on-it--not!
I am not sure what you mean, AI. Does that mean you 'win'? What wiki and what did you link to? Send me an email and I will cough up the VCP credit on your tab to the tune of a half. Deal?
You already lost the bet by not being able to figure out the clues I gave you! How about you buy me a round of hoppy tomorrow evening? Gimme a call if you get anywhere near a landline -- I don't want to be responsible for your brains getting fried anymore than usual (or is that grilled?)
