Darpa cannonball, Coanda aircraft
Human cannonball, that is. This can hardly compare with Webster's definition of fixed-wing aircraft:
Among aerodynamically lifted aircraft, the largest number falls in the category of fixed-wing aircraft, where horizontal surfaces produce lift, by profiting from the Coanda effect (aeroplane or airplane).
Powwwww!

Don't we already have helicopters and fast-roping that would get troops or swat on the roofs? Why would this be any better?
The human mind always looks for better solutions - eg, it was Coanda's 1910 experiment that brought us helicopters and jets (well, to some extent). But this one is ridiculuous. Are we spending taxpayer's money to design such a contraption?
Yesterday, while driving past a two-story building (a "skyscraper" by Dakota standards), I visualized this giant saddle-piston shooting SWAT and soldiers — in theory — onto the roof of the building. Then reality took hold of my theory, and I visualized the SWAT and soldiers either falling short in the launch (smacking the side of the building), or being hurled two stories too high (which also ended in a "splat" sounding manner).
This is completely ridiculous. I can't think of any other application other than circus use.
