The beat goes on

It's all Bush's fault, would say Le Monde, yes?

>>Colasan told reporters that the gunman said he was carrying out the attack because of a February decision by the court that barred the promotion of a teacher who wore an Islamic-style headscarf outside of work.

while there is no doubt that bush bears responsiblity for much of the bloodshed in iraq, i am not sure Le Monde would see this turkish story similarly. Unless of course du-du-dubbyah had been secretely promoting a Chiraquien-style ban on headscarves.

It's called antiaméricanisme primaire -- doesn't need logic to justify it. It's the raison d'etre for le Monde types...

surely you aren't making this up and have the quote from Le Monde. You wouldn't want to be called antii-Monde primaire ?

Well, I'm making this up, but I've seen enough stories along those lines from le Monde in the past 4-5 years (mostly supplied by JJ, I don't normally click on their site), to make an educated guess what the likes of Fottorino or Dhormes think. It's called inference.

it's called extrapolation.

Both inference and extrapolation can be useful. In this case -- trying to predict (with >95% confidence) what le Monde would say when it comes to an incident like this one -- both methods lead to the same conclusion. It''s a matter of inductive reasoning.

i remember my numerical analysis days well, particularly the accuracy of predictions resulting from extrapolation.
