sorry - i really don't buy this "just a rotten apple" argument. The argument made, if i can paraphrase, is that of fundamental good, despite evidence to the contrary. Abu Ghraib ? Overhyped. The countless victims of bombings during the initial invasion ? not mentioned. The repeated incidents of soldiers shooting at demonstrators ? skipped. Finally this difficult to discount Haditha incident ? an outlier.

Again, how many outliers before we stop considering them outliers ?

I think Owens makes a pretty balanced case. He's a serious, knowledgeable guy -- from Marine grunt in Nam to dean at the Naval College. So I put weight on what he says.

Now, if Haditha turns out to be a mini MyLai, that can be safely considered an outlier, as the original was (as long as a pattern does not emerge, which I don't see). Of course, My Lay was picked by the Left as the wedge to demoralize the US, and thereby let the NV commies conquer South Vietnam (the goal of the Left all along). Whether they can do the same thing now with Haditha (as they tried to do with Abu Ghraib) and thereby hand over Iraq to Zarqawi & Co, remains to be seen. I hope not.
