A safe place to invade

I may have scooped you on this one Pepe. It's an interesting subject, but I'm calling "bullshit" on NASA and any other country who says they are going to colonize the moon — we've been hearing about this stuff in the same tone that we've heard about flying cars and underwater cities.

Here's the Yahoo! take on it (pretty similar).

Oh, I was really kidding.

On the plus side though, the US is likely to win and whoever is the commander in chief will be able to strut around all the "mission accomplished" banners s/he wishes w/o suffering ridicule the following week.

First, it's likely the U.S. will "win" (as you put it), but it'll determine on whether sitting presidents will give scientists in America the support similar to what they got for the Manhattan Project. In our age of Absurdity and Skepticism, it's unlikely to take off (really bad pun, I know).

I suppose there's some kind of political gain that a sitting president would yield. In the history of such a feat (camping on the moon with equipment that was made by the lowest bidder), historians will also reflect on not only the Space Race, but on what the Western world can do when they put their minds to something.

Anyhow, space is cool.
