That period (and the one immediately after, up to 1979), was the local nadir of the US of A -- the only time that I really was afraid the West is gonna lose it in the Cold War. Now we're 5 years into a different kind of War, which may well take longer (and be even nastier) than the Cold one. Are we going to weather this one, too? The jury is still out. But unless we get smarter and better at it, sooner rather than later, it won't be pretty.
