Zimbabwe has been tormented this entire decade by both deep recession and high inflation, but in recent months the economy seems to have abandoned whatever moorings it had left. The national budget for 2006 has already been largely spent. Government services have started to crumble.

The purity of Harare's drinking water, siphoned from a lake downstream of its sewer outfall, has been unreliable for months, and dysentery and cholera swept the city in December and January. The city suffers rolling electrical blackouts. Mounds of uncollected garbage pile up on the streets of the slums.

Aahhh, the joys of Socialism! Just hang in there, waiting for les Lendemains qui Chantent. Karlie promised them.

shit - i had no idea that by pointing out an interesting attempt at economic cooperation between 3 left-leaning South American countries, I was unwittingly acting as an apologist for a dictatorship in Africa.

Is there any chance though that the woes of Zimbabwe have actually a lot more to do with Mugabe using the economy as his personal slush fund than with anything else ?

What is the brilliant concept you are trying to articulate? Mugabe bad hence Pino good ?

it's a tu quoque, I admit, but are you saying (most of the time) USA bad therefore (fill in the blank, but Chavez is the example du jour) is good?
