football vs soccer

Clever cartoon, Pepe.

I can say that I was bombarded with Viking football throughout my childhood and have gotten used to disappointment and misery -- stuff that is at the foundation of the Scandinavian volk, and that which is said to fuel the stoicism.

The cartoon is clever because it captures much of what I used to think of soccer: just a bunch of foreigners running around and kicking some goddamned ball.

That I followed the World Cup this year provided me a greater appreciation for the entire sport, and the energy and emotion that goes into it.

I also liked how there weren't any commercial interruptions during the World Cup games (at least not anywhere near the degree of U.S. sports).

Good point about the commercials, MFT. Actually, I pretty much stopped watching sports, because of that. The constant interruptions, stupid palaver, mauldin interviews, inane song and dance, etc, detract from the sport to the point it all becomes meaningless. I am thinking especially about the Olympic Games, which by now are basically unwatchable in the US.

At any rate, yes, for all my griping about the Euros, I must say that their much less cluttered, straightforward coverage of sporting events is definitely superior to the US coverage.

But, in true Yankee ingenuity fashion, there must be a solution to this problem -- can't be rocket science, can it? Any ideas?

Sure - this is probably anathema to some of you but how a quality-driven state-owned channel with minimal profitability requirements ? No more commercials, enjoy your tv.
