A potential short term solution...

...to outfit sailors with until the naval convoys get up and running to escort international commerce.

Point? Counterpoint?

The pirates have AK47s and RPGs (old Soviet stuff, I imagine). You can't defend a ship against that kind of assault just with sidearms, such as a Magnum 44. You need either superior firepower, or other measures (or both). From the various ideas I read about, I liked high-pressure fire hoses: install a water-canon on deck, and just spray at will if pirates board. How's that?

Yes, the water canon could provide one layer of protection. I'd prefer to be packing a hand canon as well.

There must also be some ways to detect these little skiffs if they bump up against a transport?

Also, what do you think about the convoy method: a large group of cargo ships escorted by 2-3 (or even one) fast moving destroyers. Keep a couple sniper squads on the destroyers, too.
