Harvard-trained biologist goes postal

REGURGE: A story of another deadly shooting, a long time ago (in Braintree), and of a possible cover-up. Curiouser and curiouser.
REREGURGEGURGE.
REREREGURGEGURGEGURGE.
IT'S ALL RASMUSSEN'S FAULT? A family source said Bishop, a mother of four children - the youngest a third-grade boy - was a far-left political extremist who was “obsessed” with President Obama to the point of being off-putting.
Question: How obsessed does one have to be with Obama before it becomes off-putting? Like anything >0, imo.

REREREGURGE: Anger management, the Amy Bishop way.

Taranto outdoes your title, Tecs. How about a good seethe or two?

Yep. Why did she blow a gasket? Funny is the human mind.

Wow, Delahunt was the DA. He's Hugo's heating oil buddy, right?

Mr roT said...

Speaking of whom...

Tecumseh said...

Hmmm... Where did I hear that kind of story before? That is, politico lets loose nutso, nutso goes postal. I think the first time I heard such a story was back in 1988: Duke & Willie. More recently, it was the Huckster, but he seems to have had it brushed off for now. Could Delahunt be next? We'll see.

Nice blog by Jules -- he a Boston Herald guy? Excerpt: It’s like the party of Ted became the party of Patches overnight. So did it ”activist government” fall out of favor or trip on its own shoelaces? It’s a question for the ages.

What’s going on now is like the Godfather without Michael. Sonny, a.k.a. Joe K II, got whacked at the Jersey tolls by his ex-wife’s tell-all on that annulment business a long time ago, took himself out of consideration, and the rest of them are starting … Kennedys, Coakley and Massachusetts Dems, make that Democrats in general … are starting to look like a lot of Fredos.

I love you, Fredo.

We’re early in this process, and while they are talking about the ones that look like easy pickoffs … Delahunt and Tsongas … you will start to see people mulling out loud whether people like Barney Frank and Ed Markey haven’t done enough in the name of public service already.

Ooh la la.

Mr roT said...

...haven’t done enough in the name of public service already.

I liked that turn of phrase. Barney Frank out in 2 1/2?

Wow. This is turning curiouser and curiouser, indeed. So she probably went Ted Kaczynski after offing her brother, but that still didn't rate an eyebat from any of the Boston cops or DAs... Then she gets a big NIH grant (you kiddin' me? R15 is a biggg deal in that business), but doesn't get tenure (hmmm... maybe some of those colleagues were getting bad vibes?), after which she just whacks everyone in sight.

Although the context is totally different, this story reminds me somehow of the killing spree at Ft Hood, and how the system conspired to push up and up Major Hasan -- again without a peep.

We are in good hands.

Mr roT said...

Hasan: A lot of dots not being connected, that's for sure.

About that grant, $300k doesn't seem like much to run a lab, but probably she had start-up money from the Univ.

The invention with her husband sounds like a big deal. They've got $1.2M in investments. Depends on what they were planning on making, but if it's the typical little plastic box with a battery and a chip, it's probably enough.

Looked at her papers. They're a little weird. Corresp auth = first auth. That means that she either didn't have real PhD students around and was doing the labwork herself or she was stealing the credit.

Eiither way it's a problem, maybe because the lab is there to train PhD students too, not just crank out papers.

Uh, 1, 2, and the Dept head was the Dept head.

Looks like Podila actually was doing some research, like Bishop, sorta.

She had a gripe.

Mr roT said...

News article.
Sammie Lee Davis, Davis' husband, said in a brief phone interview that he was told a faculty member got angry while discussing tenure at the meeting and started shooting. He said his wife had described Bishop as "not being able to deal with reality" and "not as good as she thought she was."

Check out Maria's publication record. She would've known good if it bit her on the ass.

Mr roT said...

er, wouldn't've

Tecumseh said...

I clicked on those links, but couldn't really tell. I mean, how can I judge that stuff? But, all in all, looked rather thin to my untrained eye. One thing I noticed: On Bishop's page, she pads her publications list by including a bunch of talks. Jeepers. At any rate, keep in in mind this is UAH, not Harvard or something. How high can the standards be for tenure? Looks to me that she was pissing people off being such a nutso, perhaps that didn't help? She must be fast on the trigger.

Mr roT said...

Point is that she's getting hounded by a bunch of inferiors. This wasn't random wackoness.

The guy Johnson published everything in J. Alabama Acad. Sci.

This would be a joke if he weren't in the morgue.

Mr roT said...

I think she was being railroaded, Tecs.

Tecumseh said...

Looks like it. Clearly, she better academically than those hicks. I mean, duh. Musta pissed those guys off that she was getting those NIH grants, starting a company, the works. So they vote against tenure. Happens all the time. Never heard of someone going postal on account of that, though.

Mr roT said...

Seems to be in the air.

Tecumseh said...

Why not get a shyster and sue, instead? Isn't that the American way?

Mr roT said...

Then you have no alternative when the shyster rips you off but to arm up and blow his brains out.
Seems to me you can cut out the middle man this way. Of course, you go to the big house or maybe even the gurney.

Tecumseh said...

Getting back to the Beantown angle, here is an interesting tidbit, from a guy who was held at gunpoint by dear Amy, way back when:

Braintree police Chief Paul Frazier has said officers on duty claim they were forced by retired former Chief John Polio to let Bishop, whose mother was a member of the police personnel board, go. Polio denies that and said then-District Attorney William Delahunt investigated the case and ruled it an accident.

I smell a big fat commie rat.

Tecumseh said...

A little conspiracy theory from the comments section:

The mother was head of the police personnel board and that is key. She allowed placement of applicants who are desired by the police department and herself I am sure swept under the rug any disciplinary charges against connected or 'needed' officers.

What is astounding is we are talking about small potatoes here, yet murder by the daughter of this public employee is tolerated.

More is going on here. It is not hard to consider the possibility that the Bishops were government informers. Perhaps they worked for the Feds. The Feds did not care if you murdered as long as you were a good informer ( a la whitey bulger)

Aahhh, Whitey Bulger! Where is he, by the way? How come the federales never nabbed this guy?

Tecumseh said...

Hah! I'm onto something. More comments along those lines:

It the white washy, State Police hack novel, Amy fires the shotgun in her bedroom. Firing a gun, a shotgun especially, in an enclosed place is deafening, shockingly loud. Yet, Amy says she then 'hears' her brother come into the house downstairs. This is the same house, that the mom, Judy, said she didn't hear the 12 ga shotgun blast upstairs.

And of course the dutiful hack, State Police Officer accepts this...and being stupid to boot, writes it in his 'report'.

Amy not booked or charged. Delahunt calls the office( that's some pull ), she literally walks, no DA interview for 11 days for everyone to get their story ( not so ) straight. A dutiful hack State Police officers writes a poor fiction story, and signs it. And the true real evidence goes missing from the Police files.

Nice and tidy.

Of course it's been a while since we in Mass have had a look at 'justice'. FBI most wanted Whitey Bulger, brother of long time Speaker of the House Billy Bulger (now getting 300k pension a year ). And of course, Ted, Chappaquiddick and the Democrat State Police and Attorney falling all over themselves to cover up.

Massachusetts, where a politician can wake up in bed with a small boy or a dead girl and get re-elected.

Hey, that's stolen from Edwin Edwards. Is there no shame in Massachusetts? Stealing quips?

...and glue a cellphone to your head. The Bad Alz is comin'!

Tecumseh said...

I need to fix my wrist. And get a new laptop. This old G4 is starting to suck.

Mr roT said...

Uh, Tecs...that kind of kvetching sound familiar...

Just sayin'.

Tecumseh said...

Taranto finally wakes up -- looks like you hand a hand at it? I notice good ole Jack (he of the big white hair sticking out, Einstein-like) chips in his 2 cents. How come T. listens to you guys, but not me? Is it perhaps due to the fact that I never deigned to write to him? Hah.

Tecumseh said...

PS: Don't think I'm seething. I'm not. Really not.

Mr roT said...

Post-doctoral, Tecs. You could have thought of that...

Jack Levin? Never heard of him before.

Tecumseh said...

He's a colorful figure. I bump into him now and then, and he says hello.
