Well, I don't know how well this movie stands the test of time (many don't), but Belmondo is always good to watch. The movie does take gibes at the "perfidious Albion" for taking care of the British soldiers ahead of the Frenchies, but hey, what do you expect? Besides, Catherine Spaak was very cute. By the way, do you know that her uncle, Paul-Henri Spaak, was Belgium's Foreign Minister at the time (1939-1940)? I'm getting off-track, I guess...

Spaak (the elder) was a big poombah in Belgium (Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, etc) in the 1930s-1940s, then with the United Nations, NATO, etc. He's widely regarded as one of the Founding Fathers of Euroland. At any rate, last summer, while wandering through my old stomping grounds, I stumbled over a bust of him, which was erected a few years ago, kind of halfway between where once stood two gigantic statues of Lenin and Stalin -- both now relegated to the asheap of history. Now, if I could only bring Ozymandias into this story...
