At least, they make decent red wines in Chile. Is there such thing as a Portuguese Merlot or Cabernet?

Not called as such, although some vintages of simple "red wine" are actually in one or the other of those two categories. Excepting Port, most Portuguese wines fall into the "good, solid, table wine" category. Whether Vinho Verde, Vinho Branco, or Vinho Tinto. I'm not sure what to say about Rose', except that the Brits and Saddam really really loved it.
