When Historians Go Bad, Boy Do They Pay
just a little bad, just a little maybe one extra tawny port on New Year's eve bad, just one tiny little moment of being in character too long bad, and KABOOM... Stupid of him.
So, MFT, still eager to play the Historian in my Pacific nordwest?

AA, I was just about to write a comment, claiming a bottle of Arrogant Bastard to be put on my infinite tab, when I saw the disclaimer you put just below my post on this subject. You're right, you made much better justice to the story than I did. It's a really sad, sad world. What I pointless, heart-breaking tragedy. You could say, Darwin alert! -- but that's not it. Some people just play to a different drum, they don't deserve to be mowed down like that. I wish I knew a way this could have been averted, but I don't.
I'm a little pissed with the hack journalist who refers to anyone as a "buff" when they are training to be a serious historian.
It's a sick, sick world.
More details. Father shoulda known better.
Considering how close to David Duke Lands of Northern Idaho, it's somewhat difficult to think how much differently I would've reacted: some guy in a WWII German uniform waving a mauser in your face? A tragedy of absurd proportions, possibly a storyline for Larry David's "Curb Your Enthusiasm."
AA, you didn't move back to Seattle, did you? It's more difficult keeping geographic tabs on you.
It's not clear whether he had a uniform on him (either from WWI or WWII) -- but that should have played no role in this case. And, why raise the red herring of David Duke? The guy was an eccentric history major, from what I understand, not politically involved. And, even he were, that's not a reason to shoot him down on the spot, like a wild animal -- is it? From what I gather, he just froze, and panicked, or something, when confronted by the policemen: a bad, bad move. Shit happens. and this was bad shit -- but let's not drag politics gratuitously into this.
Speaking of police shooting 22-year old men on New Year's Day, here is another case -- in Pepe's backyard. This guy was shot 14 times, 12 of which in the back, wile running away. Maybe he had a David Duke goatee, or something? Ah, his name was Adolph. I guess that does it.
AI, I'm just trying to pontificate on cop logic. I'm not justifying what they did.
OK. But, after reading carefully the several articles on the subject, it appears it's not so much a matter of logic, but of training and gut reaction. They see a man with a gun, pointed at them, and that's it, they shoot. The poor soul basically committed (assisted) suicide by not dropping the effing (empty) gun. Senseless.
One more story, with some more background.
