Joan Crippa came home on Feb. 26, the day her husband gathered the mushrooms, to find him sautéing them with butter in a pan. "He really ate a lot of them," she said. "He said they were the best mushrooms he had ever eaten."
No sense in lingering on the vine, or stem in this case. I think one of those little poisonous bastards is enough to do a liver in.
Make sure to reference a copy of "Edible Wild Plants" before harvesting and tossing anything into a skillet. Nature is tasty, but she's also an unforgiving bitch.
Apparently, the old geezer read the book beforehand, but these creepy fungi are sneaky: the bad one looks almost identical to the good one. Hasta la vista, baby. But, as Mr Rot said, when you gotta go you gotta go -- may as well go out with a bang, splurging on sauteed wild mushrooms, than with a whimper. Que dici?
