Applebaum reflects on Politkovskaya's murder last Saturday.
Politkovskaya's murder marks a distinct turning point. There was no attempt to disguise the murder as a theft or an accident: Her assassin not only shot her in broad daylight, he left her body in the elevator of her apartment building alongside the gun he used to kill her—standard practice for Moscow's arrogant hit men... As Russian (and East European) history itself well demonstrates, it isn't always necessary to murder millions of people in order to frighten all the others: A few choice assassinations at the right time and in the right place usually suffice.
In the poetic sense, it's very inspirational for Pepe's sophisticated nihilism.
Of the murder of a journalist itself, Chekhov would most-certainly be saddened.

How about this for sophisticated nihilism: What if it were Peter Arnett?
