My Frontier Thesis said...: Evolutionary Anthropologists don't like this kind of stuff. When questioned why -- or how -- children best develop critical thinking skills, they tend to agree that accidents, bruises, scraps (and trouble in general) causes the synapse to fire. They begin sorting through the problematics of life. Without trouble, we're raising a bunch of kids in a frictionless society. (AA: when I first read this theory, I thought of you and your dad-tormenting daughter... although your sanity may be compromised, it's better for her in the long run).

This frictionless society is propogated from the towers and institutions of Western Civilization. I chat with a friend about the ideas espoused by Harold Bloom and Christopher Hitchens, but in quiet: we don't want to offend anyone.

Even the British-Marxist labor historian and Allied WWII tank veteran, E.P. Thompson, would be shocked by how far the bullshit has gone. Note: Thompson referred to Methodism as "mental masturbation," and when he offered praise, it was usually in the form of, "And a fuckin' Amen to that!"
