the Middle of Nowhere

Yankton is located in the southeastern part of South Dakota, right near the confluence of the Missouri and James Rivers. I've been there a few times. It used to be the old Dakota Territorial capital. Many a murder case was held there in the U.S. Territorial Court, all in an attempt to bring a bit of order to the American West.

Senator Tim Johnson is only spouting half-truths: Yankton isn't the middle of nowhere. You need to travel to northeastern and northcentral South Dakota for that.

The historic district is pretty. And you can visit the Captain Grant Marsh statue right near the Missouri River bank (I have a photo of it but I don't know how to click on things to make my photo appear on blogger.com).

Marsh was the riverboat captain who made a record run with the Far West steamboat to carry the wounded and dead from Little Bighorn back to Bismarck, arriving there on July 5th, 1876. Info was wired back from Bismarck to D.C. Yes, the Sioux had had enough of Custer.

Today, Yankton touts a Hyvee with one of the better liquor selections in the city. I remember getting a six of Boulevard Wheat there for something like six bucks -- trust me, you need lots of booze if you're going to be staying or living in Yankton.
