The United States threatened to bomb Pakistan "back to the stone age" unless it joined the fight against al-Qaeda, President Pervez Musharraf says.
"I think it was a very rude remark," Mr Musharraf told CBS television.

I think it was rather polite. It implies there is some distance between Pakistan and the Stone Age, which is not at all obvious to one that's not overtly sympathetic to the Muslim Identity.

no argument here but I am more concerned about how this is going to fit with the winning the hearts and minds bit.

You got a point there. I reckon Musharraf is hacked off at someone in DC or scared of someone in Quetta or both.
Should have paid him more.
I wasn't sure what your take was because of your title. Soiunded like Pakistan would be wise to appease al Qaeda. That sounds like a bad move.

Any opinions as to why musharraf is coming out of the closet now ?

Honest politicians are the ones that stay bought.

Isn't Armitage the guy who "outed" Plame? This guy has a big mouth. (Also, a big neck!)

Yes, Armitage = Armitage. sounds like a loose cannon.
Hey AI, you know what a zeugma is, so what do you call the the relation between 'loose cannon' and 'free counterpoint'.
It should be something better than just a stupid pun.
It might be the best pun of my life, actually.

I dunno. I know there is such thing as "battery counterfire" (when a cannon shoots back at another cannon) but that's not a zeugma, not by a long shot.
